What is an Instrument Rating — and why is it the most important certificate after your Private?
The Instrument Rating is widely considered the single most valuable certificate a Private Pilot can earn — more important even than additional aircraft endorsements or hours building. Why? Because weather kills pilots. VFR-into-IMC accidents are consistently among the deadliest in general aviation, and they almost always involve pilots who were not instrument rated and had no business flying in those conditions. An Instrument Rating doesn’t just allow you to fly in clouds — it fundamentally changes how you think about weather, decision-making and risk. It makes you a safer, more disciplined VFR pilot even on days when the sky is perfectly clear.
The IFR written test is also significantly harder than the Private Pilot knowledge test. The ATC system, approach procedures, weather, regulations and navigation required for IFR operations are genuinely complex — and you need a ground school that teaches you to understand the system, not just memorise answers. That is exactly what Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course has done since they pioneered the first three-day IFR weekend ground school over 50 years ago.

Why Sporty’s stands apart for Instrument Rating training
Sporty’s pioneered IFR weekend ground schools in the 1970s, travelling the country to teach the instrument system in intensive sessions. That heritage of practical IFR instruction permeates every aspect of this course. The difference that matters most: Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course is filmed in actual IMC conditions with a CFII flying real approaches in real clouds. You don’t just see animations of approach plates — you see the instruments, hear the ATC communications and watch the approach unfold from the left seat, in actual instrument conditions. That kind of real-world immersion cannot be replicated by any other online course.
The course also includes a detailed look at the ATC system from the inside — including footage shot in an Approach Control facility so you can see exactly what controllers see on their radar screens and understand how they manage IFR traffic. Understanding the system from both sides of the radio makes you a far better IFR pilot.

The 27-manoeuvre IFR guide
Just as with the Private Pilot course, Sporty’s includes an interactive manoeuvres guide for the IFR rating — all 27 ACS manoeuvres fully documented with 3D animations, narrated procedure guides, common errors and completion standards. This covers everything from the initial ILS approach briefing to the missed approach procedure, from DME arcs to VOR approaches with course reversals. Used alongside your actual IFR flight training, it dramatically reduces the time you need to spend in the aircraft (and the simulator) getting up to speed.
What pilots say about Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course
Anyone can spend a weekend cramming and pass the FAA written test. Safe IFR flying requires a whole lot more. Sporty’s goes far beyond test prep — it teaches you how to be a confident and polished instrument pilot.
— Sporty’s course description
The real ATC audio and behind-the-scenes approach control footage is what makes this course. You actually understand how the IFR system works, not just what the right answer is on the test.

Frequently asked questions — Instrument Rating Course
How many flight hours do I need before starting the IFR course?
You can start the Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course as soon as you hold a Private Pilot certificate. The FAA requires a minimum of 50 hours of cross-country PIC time and 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time to be eligible for the checkride — but your ground training can begin at any time. Many students start the ground course while still accumulating their cross-country hours.
Does the course cover GPS/RNAV approaches or just VOR and ILS?
Yes — the Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course covers all current approach types in depth: ILS, VOR, NDB (legacy), GPS/RNAV, LPV, LNAV/VNAV and LP approaches. It also covers WAAS, the difference between LPV and ILS minimums, and how GPS approaches have replaced most VOR approaches at smaller airports. This is the real-world IFR system — not a 1990s instrument rating course.
What regulations does the IFR course cover?
The course covers all relevant IFR FARs in depth: 14 CFR 91.167–91.193 (IFR flight operations), currency requirements under 61.57(c), alternate minimums, SVFR, lost communications procedure under 91.185, IFR clearance requirements, and the relevant sections of the AIM for IFR operations. ChatFAR can answer any specific regulatory question in plain English throughout the course.
Does this course qualify for FAA WINGS credit?
Yes — completion of Sporty’s Instrument Rating Course earns FAA WINGS credit through the FAA Pilot Proficiency Program. This can satisfy flight review requirements and may also make you eligible for reduced aviation insurance premiums. Contact your insurer for details on their WINGS credit policy.
