The world’s largest aviation gathering will take on a historic tone in 2026 as EAA AirVenture Oshkosh adopts the theme “Celebrating the Freedom of Flight,” tying the iconic aviation event to the United States’ 250th anniversary.
The 73rd edition of the fly-in convention, hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association, will take place July 20–26, 2026, at Wittman Regional Airport, continuing a decades-long tradition that draws pilots, aerospace innovators, and aviation enthusiasts from across the globe.
A Historic Aviation Celebration Aligned With America’s Semiquincentennial
AirVenture 2026 will highlight the story of aviation alongside the broader narrative of American innovation and exploration. Organizers say the theme will be integrated throughout the event—from exhibits and aircraft displays to airshows and evening programs—showcasing the evolution of flight from early pioneers to modern aerospace technologies.
Displays are expected to trace aviation milestones beginning with the Wright brothers’ early powered flights and continuing through wartime aircraft development, the rise of general aviation after World War II, and the cutting-edge technologies shaping aerospace today.
The theme will appear prominently across the grounds, including in Boeing Plaza aircraft displays, daily airshows, and evening programming venues such as Theater in the Woods and the Fly-In Theater.
EAA officials say the concept will evolve throughout the planning year as organizers assemble aircraft, exhibits, and storytelling elements that reflect the nation’s aviation heritage and ongoing innovation.
One of the Largest Aviation Gatherings in the World
AirVenture Oshkosh has long been known as “The World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.” Each summer the event transforms the small Wisconsin airport into a global aviation hub for seven days.
Recent editions illustrate the scale of the gathering. In 2025, the event drew approximately 704,000 attendees from 94 countries, setting a record for attendance. More than 10,000 aircraft arrived at Wittman Regional Airport and nearby airports during the week.
The fly-in features a diverse array of aviation activity, including:
- Daily afternoon airshows
- Night airshows and twilight flight demonstrations
- Static aircraft displays spanning every era of flight
- Hundreds of aviation forums and workshops
- More than 1 million square feet of exhibits from 800+ exhibitors
- Youth programs and educational activities designed to inspire future aviators
Aircraft categories typically represented include warbirds, vintage aircraft, aerobatic performers, experimental homebuilts, ultralights, rotorcraft, and modern general aviation airplanes.
Historic Aircraft and Special Appearances Planned
Early announcements for the 2026 event already hint at unique aircraft appearances and exhibits.
Among the highlights announced so far are two aircraft from The Flying Bulls collection—a Lockheed P-38 Lightning and a Douglas DC-6B—which will make their only public U.S. airshow appearance in 2026 at Oshkosh. Both aircraft will be displayed at Boeing Plaza and participate in daily airshow demonstrations.
The Flying Bulls collection includes meticulously restored historic aircraft ranging from WWII fighters to modern helicopters and has become internationally known for showcasing rare aviation icons.
Aviation’s Role in Service and Community
Beyond historic aircraft and airshows, the event will also spotlight aviation’s humanitarian impact.
One returning feature is the Public Benefit Flying area, where organizations that provide humanitarian aviation services—such as disaster relief, medical transport, and animal rescue flights—will showcase how pilots can contribute to community support efforts.
In previous years, thousands of pilots have signed up to volunteer with these missions through programs coordinated by the Air Care Alliance, a coalition representing more than 50 aviation nonprofit organizations.
Aviation Education and Future Innovation
AirVenture’s educational mission remains a major part of the event.
The week typically features hundreds of forums, seminars, and workshops, where attendees can hear directly from pilots, engineers, historians, and aerospace leaders. Topics range from flight safety and aircraft maintenance to emerging aviation technologies and the future of flight.
Youth-focused initiatives, including the KidVenture program, provide hands-on aviation and STEM experiences for young attendees. These programs aim to inspire the next generation of pilots, engineers, and aerospace innovators.
Looking Ahead to a Historic Oshkosh
With the United States celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2026, organizers expect AirVenture’s theme to resonate strongly with aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
The event will not only highlight America’s aviation past—from early pioneers and wartime aircraft to the rise of general aviation—but also emphasize the role of aviation in shaping the nation’s future through innovation, exploration, and global connectivity.
For many pilots, Oshkosh is more than an airshow—it is a yearly pilgrimage celebrating the culture and community of flight.
