Women in Aviation International (WAI) has officially opened applications for its 2027 scholarship program, offering more than 50 scholarships valued at over $200,000 across flight training, aircraft maintenance, engineering, aviation management, dispatch, drone operations, and career advancement. Applications opened June 1, 2026, and close at 11:59 p.m. EDT on September 1, 2026. Winners will be notified by December 15, 2026, and recognized at the 38th Annual Women in Aviation International Conference in Savannah, Georgia, February 25–27, 2027.

For aviation career-builders at every stage — from student pilots to mid-career professionals to established leaders — this is one of the most consequential scholarship cycles of the year. Here’s what’s on offer, who’s eligible, and how to apply.

What’s Available in the 2027 Scholarship Cycle

The 2027 program is one of WAI’s largest yet, with more than 10 new scholarships added to the catalog. Awards cover the full breadth of aviation career paths:

Flight training scholarships. Funding for private pilot, instrument, commercial, ATP, type ratings, and recurrent training. These are among the most competitive scholarships in the program because of the cost of flight training relative to other aviation paths.

Aircraft maintenance scholarships. Awards supporting A&P certification, IA training, avionics specialization, and advanced maintenance coursework. With the FAA workforce projections showing significant mechanic shortages over the next decade, these awards are critically aimed at one of aviation’s most under-supplied roles.

Engineering scholarships. Aerospace engineering tuition support, including the addition of new space engineering scholarships in the 2027 cycle. Aerospace engineering remains one of the highest-paying entry points in aviation.

Aviation management scholarships. Awards supporting degrees and certifications in airport operations, aviation administration, and management.

Dispatch and operations scholarships. Aircraft dispatcher training, operations specialist certification, and related ground-side career paths.

Drone and UAS scholarships. Awards for Part 107 certification, commercial UAS operations training, and advanced unmanned aircraft programs.

Career advancement scholarships. Funding aimed at established professionals seeking to expand credentials or transition into new roles within aviation.

Harvard Emerging Leaders professional development. New in 2027, two leadership courses through Harvard: an on-campus Women in Leadership Course at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 11–13, 2027 (with a virtual session June 24), and a fully virtual Women in Leadership Course on Zoom June 2–4, 2027. The Harvard scholarships require at least seven years of career experience and an aptitude for leadership.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

Applicants must be current Women in Aviation International members with an active membership through at least March 30, 2027 — or join as a new member by August 30, 2026.

A few important points about eligibility:

Men are welcome to apply. Approximately 20 percent of WAI’s membership is male, and men are eligible for WAI scholarships. Despite the organization’s name, WAI’s mission is to increase aviation industry participation broadly while specifically supporting women’s career advancement.

No traditional school age requirement. Many WAI scholarships are open to applicants of any age. Mid-career professionals seeking advancement, career-changers entering aviation later in life, and traditional students are all eligible depending on the specific scholarship requirements.

Members can apply for up to three scholarships per year. Applicants who match multiple scholarship profiles should review all available options and submit up to three applications through the WAI portal.

What the Application Requires

The general WAI scholarship application is consistent across most awards:

Two letters of recommendation. Letters should be no more than one page each and cannot be from family members. References from instructors, employers, mentors, or aviation professionals carry the most weight.

One 500-word essay. The essay focuses on what inspired the applicant to join aviation, what keeps them motivated, their contributions to the community, and how the scholarship will change their life.

Resume. No more than two pages. Applicants are instructed not to include a personal photo.

For flight training scholarships. Copies of pilot and medical certificates, plus the last three pages of the pilot logbook are required.

For Harvard Emerging Leaders scholarships. A single letter of recommendation, a 500-word essay responding to a specific leadership prompt, a professional resume, and a statement of commitment to the course dates.

All applications are submitted through the WAI online portal at wai.org/scholarships. Emailed or mailed applications are not accepted.

Key Dates to Remember

The 2027 scholarship cycle runs on the following timeline:

  • June 1, 2026: Applications open
  • August 30, 2026: Deadline to join WAI as a new member to qualify
  • September 1, 2026, 11:59 p.m. EDT: Application deadline
  • December 15, 2026: Winners notified
  • February 25–27, 2027: 38th Annual WAI Conference in Savannah, Georgia, where scholarships are awarded
  • May 11–13, 2027: Harvard Emerging Leaders on-campus course (Cambridge, MA)
  • June 2–4, 2027: Harvard Emerging Leaders virtual course

The most common reason applications fail at the eligibility check is missed membership deadlines. If you’re not already a WAI member and want to apply, join before August 30, 2026.

Why WAI Scholarships Matter for the Industry

Since 1995, Women in Aviation International has awarded more than $17 million in scholarships. That’s a meaningful pool of capital invested directly in the aviation workforce pipeline.

The scholarships matter for three reasons:

Aviation training is expensive. The cost barrier is one of the most consistent reasons promising candidates exit the pipeline before earning credentials. A private pilot certificate alone costs $12,000 to $18,000. A full path through commercial, instrument, and CFI certification runs $80,000 to $120,000. Aircraft maintenance training, aerospace engineering degrees, and ATC programs all carry significant tuition costs. WAI scholarships directly reduce the financial drag on the talent pipeline.

The pipeline is widening. As of December 2025, the U.S. had a record 370,000 active student pilot certificates and a record 100,000+ women pilots — the first time in history women have crossed that threshold. The pipeline is broader and more diverse than at any point in aviation history. Scholarships keep that momentum moving.

Industry leaders consistently cite mentorship and access as critical. WAI CEO Lynda Coffman framed the program’s value directly in the announcement: “WAI believes in shaping the future of our industry by investing in the people who will meet the needs of our growing global aviation workforce. Our annual scholarship program is one of the most meaningful benefits of WAI membership.”

For aspiring pilots, mechanics, engineers, controllers, and managers — particularly those for whom traditional financing routes are constrained — these awards can be career-defining.

How to Make Your Application Stand Out

The WAI scholarship committee reviews thousands of applications each cycle. A few principles separate strong applications from average ones:

Be specific in your essay. Vague aspirations like “I love aviation” don’t differentiate. Specific stories — a particular moment that crystallized your aviation passion, a concrete community contribution, a clear next step the scholarship enables — stand out.

Choose recommenders strategically. A short, specific letter from a flight instructor, employer, or aviation industry mentor who can speak to your work directly is more powerful than a generic letter from someone of higher rank who barely knows you.

Tailor each application. Apply for up to three scholarships, but customize each one. Generic applications submitted across multiple scholarships read as lower commitment to reviewers.

Polish the resume. Two pages, no photo, focused on relevant aviation experience, education, and community involvement. Aviation-specific accomplishments (solo dates, certificates earned, flight time, work experience at FBOs or flight schools) belong front and center.

Submit early. Don’t wait until the final hours before the September 1 deadline. Portal issues, last-minute essay edits, and reference letter coordination all become harder under deadline pressure.
