Lightspeed Aviation has released a free firmware update that adds a Rotax-specific ANR and audio profile to every Lightspeed Delta Zulu headset, including ones already in pilots’ flight bags. If you fly behind a Rotax 912 iS, 915 iS, or 916 iS, you can now switch your headset’s noise cancellation to a profile Lightspeed built for those engines.

What the Rotax profile does
Active noise reduction (ANR) works by measuring the noise inside the ear cup and producing an opposing signal to cancel it. Every engine and cabin produces a different mix of noise, so a headset tuned for one airplane won’t be ideal for every airplane.
Lightspeed spent about a year working with engine maker BRP-Rotax on a profile for the 912 iS, 915 iS, and 916 iS engine families. The profile adjusts both the noise cancellation and the audio to those engines’ sound, with the goal of clearer radio calls and a quieter cockpit.
It doesn’t replace the standard setting. In the Lightspeed App, you can switch between the Rotax profile and Lightspeed’s Signature ANR profile depending on what you’re flying that day.
Lightspeed says the Rotax profile is available only on the Delta Zulu. The Delta Zulu was designed so its firmware could be updated after purchase, which is why existing owners get the feature without buying new hardware.
Why a Rotax sounds different
If you’ve flown both a Rotax-powered trainer and a Cessna 172, you’ve heard the difference. Most Lycoming and Continental engines in training aircraft are direct drive: the propeller turns at the same speed as the engine. A Rotax 912 runs much faster, up to 5,800 rpm for takeoff, and uses a reduction gearbox to slow the propeller down. On the 100-hp 912 ULS, that gearbox ratio is 2.43 to 1.
Because the engine and propeller turn at very different speeds, the cockpit gets a different mix of noise than you’d hear behind a Lycoming. That’s the sound Lightspeed tuned the new profile for.
Rotax engines are increasingly common in modern trainers and light sport aircraft. A few examples covered by Lightspeed’s named engine families:
| Aircraft | Engine |
|---|---|
| Tecnam P-Mentor | Rotax 912 iSc |
| Bristell B23-915 | Rotax 915 iSc |
| Bristell B23 (916 variant) | Rotax 916 iS |
Many other Rotax-powered aircraft use the carbureted 912 ULS or 912 S. That includes the first FAA-certified version of the Bristell B23. Lightspeed’s announcement names only the fuel-injected iS engines, so if your airplane has a carbureted Rotax, try both profiles and use whichever sounds better to you.
Who should care
- Student pilots training in a Rotax-powered airplane. You’ll spend a lot of hours behind that engine. A quieter cockpit and clearer radio calls make long lessons less tiring.
- CFIs who fly more than one type. If you teach in a Rotax trainer in the morning and a 172 in the afternoon, you can switch profiles between flights instead of compromising on one setting.
- Owners of Rotax-powered aircraft. If you already own a Delta Zulu, the update costs nothing. If you’re shopping for a headset, this gives the Delta Zulu an edge for your airplane specifically.
How to get the update
The update is installed through the free Lightspeed App on an iPhone or iPad. Do it on the ground, not on the ramp before a lesson.
- Update the Lightspeed App to the latest version.
- Turn on your Delta Zulu and connect it to the app over Bluetooth.
- If new firmware is available, the app will prompt you. Accept the update and let it download and install.
- Open the ANR and Audio Profile setting and select the Rotax profile.
To go back, select the Signature profile the same way. If you don’t see the profile option after updating, check that both the app and the headset firmware are current, or contact Lightspeed support.
What else the Delta Zulu does
The Rotax profile is the newest feature, but it isn’t the main reason most pilots buy a Delta Zulu. Here’s what else it includes.
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Carbon monoxide alerts | A sensor built into the headset monitors cabin CO and gives audible warnings. The app shows live CO readings and a history of past flights. |
| HearingEQity | A 12-frequency hearing test in the app builds a separate audio profile for each ear. The settings save to the headset, so you don’t need your phone to use them. |
| Power options | Swappable battery cartridges take either a rechargeable lithium-ion pack or two AA batteries. |
| Bluetooth | Connects to your phone for calls, music, and the Lightspeed App. |
| Build and warranty | Metal headband, Kevlar-reinforced cables, and a 7-year limited warranty. |
The CO alert is the feature we’d point students to first. Carbon monoxide from an exhaust leak is odorless, and its early symptoms, like headache and fatigue, are easy to blame on a long lesson. A passive CO spot on the panel only changes color, and only if you look at it.
The Delta Zulu is Lightspeed’s flagship headset and is priced accordingly. It currently lists for about $1,299 at major pilot shops, so check the current price before you buy.
Where to buy
You can shop the Lightspeed Delta Zulu through Skyfarer’s Lightspeed link. Every Delta Zulu, new or already in use, gets the Rotax profile through the same free update. (Skyfarer may earn a commission on purchases made through this link.)
Frequently asked questions
Does the Rotax profile work on the Zulu 3 or Zulu 4? No. Lightspeed says the profile is available only on the Delta Zulu.
Should I use the Rotax profile in a Lycoming- or Continental-powered airplane? Probably not. It’s tuned for Rotax engines, so the Signature profile is the better starting point for anything else. Switching takes a few taps, so you can compare both.
I own a Rotax engine. Can I get a Delta Zulu through Rotax Care? Possibly. Rotax Care is an optional extended warranty program for Rotax four-stroke aircraft engines. Since August 2026, qualifying enrollments have included a Delta Zulu with the Rotax profile already installed, along with three additional years of engine warranty coverage. Check with your Rotax distributor for eligibility.
