Stuck on Landings? Why More Pattern Work Isn’t Always the Answer

If you’ve flown lap after lap around the pattern and still don’t feel like your landings are improving, the instinct is to book more pattern work. Often that’s exactly the wrong move. What you’re experiencing has a name — the FAA’s Aviation Instructor’s Handbook calls it a learning plateau, a normal and expected phase where performance levels off despite continued practice. Grinding out more repetitions during a plateau tends to reinforce whatever you’re doing wrong, burn money, and deepen the frustration. Three things usually break the logjam faster than another hour of touch-and-goes: a specific diagnostic conversation with your CFI, chair flying, and a lesson with a different instructor.

Here’s how to work through it.

The Plateau Is Normal — and It’s Documented

First, the reassurance: you are not uniquely bad at landings.

Learning plateaus are a well-established feature of skill acquisition, and the FAA addresses them directly in its instructor guidance. Progress in flight training isn’t linear. It comes in steps — periods of rapid improvement followed by stretches where performance seems to stall even though the student is working just as hard.

Landings are where this shows up most often, for a simple reason: a landing is not one skill. It’s airspeed control, sight picture, rudder coordination, crosswind correction, energy management, and checklist discipline all executing simultaneously in the final thirty seconds of a flight. Improvement in one element can be masked by a weakness in another, which makes the whole thing feel static even when parts of it are getting better.

Almost every pilot hits this wall. What separates the ones who get through it quickly is that they change their approach instead of just adding repetitions.

Why More Pattern Work Can Make It Worse

Three mechanisms work against you when you respond to a plateau with volume:

You practice the error. Repetition builds whatever you’re actually doing, correct or not. If you’re consistently flaring high, twenty more landings can make flaring high more automatic — not less.

Fatigue degrades learning. Pattern work is intense. By the eighth or ninth circuit, most students are mentally saturated, and the last few landings are often the worst. Learning that happens under saturation tends not to stick.

Frustration compounds. Once you’re expecting a bad landing, tension creeps into your inputs — stiff on the controls, behind the airplane, second-guessing. That’s a hard cycle to fly out of.

The pattern is a great place to apply a skill. It’s a poor place to diagnose one.

1. Have a Specific Conversation With Your CFI

Tell your instructor plainly that you’re frustrated and you want to know exactly what’s holding you back. Then push for specifics.

Vague feedback — “you’re getting there,” “just keep practicing” — is comfortable for both of you and useless. Ask directly:

  • Is this a rudder problem or an aileron problem?
  • Am I floating on every landing, and is that airspeed or flare timing?
  • Am I behind on checklists and losing capacity for the actual flying?
  • Is my sight picture wrong in the flare — am I looking at the wrong place?
  • Is it one thing consistently, or different problems each time?

That last question matters enormously. A consistent, repeatable error is a much easier fix than randomness, and it points to a specific correction. Random results usually indicate a scan or workload problem rather than a stick-and-rudder one.

Most CFIs will give you far better feedback when you ask for it this directly, because the question tells them what kind of answer you actually want.

2. Chair Fly It

This is the highest-return, lowest-cost item on the list, and it’s dramatically underused.

Chair flying means sitting somewhere quiet — a chair, a cockpit poster, a photo of your panel — and running the procedure with your hands and your voice. Talk through the pattern: power setting, flap extension, airspeed target, the turn to final, where your eyes go in the flare, what your feet are doing.

It works because of what’s usually broken. Most students at a landing plateau know what to do. What they lack is the neural pathways and muscle memory to execute it correctly under time pressure. Chair flying builds exactly those connections, and it does it at zero dollars per hour.

Two things make it substantially more effective:

Verbalize out loud. Silent visualization is fine; saying it aloud is better. It forces sequencing and exposes gaps you’d otherwise skip past.

Do it with your instructor. Ask if you can chair fly at the start of your next lesson, narrating as you go, and have them correct you before you’re airborne. Fixing a procedural misunderstanding on the ground costs nothing. Fixing it in the flare costs an hour of Hobbs time and a hard landing.

Ten minutes a day for a week will do more than one extra flight lesson.

3. Fly With a Different CFI

This one makes students uncomfortable, and it shouldn’t. It isn’t a criticism of your instructor — it’s a diagnostic.

Instructors teach the way they were taught, and every CFI has a personal toolkit of explanations, references, and corrections. If one instructor’s framing of the flare hasn’t clicked after fifteen hours, a different explanation of the same concept sometimes lands immediately.

A fresh set of eyes also catches habits your regular instructor has stopped noticing. When someone flies with you every week, small persistent errors can normalize into background noise.

Frame it as a one-off. A single lesson or a stage check with another CFI, then back to your primary instructor with whatever you learned. Good instructors understand this and often suggest it themselves.

A Few Other Things Worth Trying

Change the runway. Practicing at one airport with one runway orientation builds a sight picture keyed to that specific environment. A different field, a different runway width, or a different approach can reveal what you’re actually referencing.

Check your seat position. Sight picture depends on eye height, and inconsistent seat position produces inconsistent flares. Set it the same way every flight and note where the glareshield sits relative to the horizon.

Go back to airwork. Slow flight and power-off stalls at altitude rebuild the pitch-power-airspeed relationship that landings depend on, with room for error and no runway rushing at you.

Use a simulator. Sim time won’t replicate the feel of the flare, but it’s effective for procedures, checklist flow, and pattern sequencing — the workload elements that often crowd out the actual flying.

Look at the human factors. Are you flying tired, dehydrated, or after a long workday? Are you scheduling lessons too far apart for skills to carry over? These affect landings more than most students recognize.
