Pilots are trained to respect heat — but almost entirely as an aircraft problem. Density altitude gets calculated, takeoff and landing distances get adjusted, and performance charts get consulted. What gets far less attention is what the same conditions do to the person flying. Cooling Tactics That Actually Get Used

  • Ice pack on the neck and upper chest — Brown used this on solo cross-countries, and credits it mostly with reducing how stressful the heat felt.
  • Cooling wrist bands — the motion-sickness band form factor with freezable metal beads at the pulse points. Niehaus has heard good things but has not personally tested them.
  • A cooler-and-fan “swamp cooler” for the cabin — ice in a cooler with a fan blowing across it, sitting in the back seat. Sold at fly-ins, and DIY plans are widely available.

The Trap Nobody Talks About: Starting the Engine Early
