In short: This clip captures Rod Machado doing what he does best on stage: telling aviation stories that get big laughs. What you’ll learn

  • A radio exchange about mystery traffic that turns out to be very close to home
  • Why Rod prefers a Cessna 152 flyby to flashier airplanes
  • Rod’s thoughts on why aviation’s people are its best feature
  • His tongue-in-cheek interview advice for a young aspiring airline pilot
  • The nervous student, the leather glove and the punchline Rod is known for

Live on stage

This recording shows the seminar style that made Rod a favorite speaker at aviation events. He opens with a story about a friend departing London who reported possible traffic off his right side, and a controller with a dry answer about who that might be. From there, Rod describes himself as so excited about aviation that it takes two glide slopes to bring him down.

He jokes that he prefers a Cessna 152 flyby over faster, fancier airplanes simply because it lasts longer, and that his favorite parts of aviation include the grit, the grease and the grime. That’s just the airport coffee, he adds.

People and their stories

Rod credits anthropologist Edward T. Hall with the idea that if you appreciate people and their stories, you’ll never lack entertainment, and he says that’s why he loves aviation. He shares one such story from Sun ‘n Fun, where a teenager with a pierced tongue asked whether it might affect his future airline career. Rod’s playful answer, followed by some sensible advice to take it out for the interview, gets a big laugh.

A familiar favorite

Longtime fans will recognize the story of the student who stuck out his tongue on approach and pointed it in the direction of each turn, and the leather glove Rod carried in his flight case. He closes with affectionate memories of his grandfather’s teasing sense of humor. It’s a light, fun watch and a reminder that laughter is a big part of how Rod teaches.
